The Times - Crucial Property Conflicts in Northern Cyprus
(For those considering purchasing in the North)
21/12/2005 - 12:12
On the 22nd of November, The Times newspaper unveiled the very real consequences that can follow property purchases in the north of Cyprus. The revealing article sends out a forewarning siren to those considering buying in the occupied part of the Island.
Mr. & Mrs. Orams moved into their dream home less than two years ago and now face losing it to the original owner of the plot. The Orams have been ordered to tear their new home down and to pay thousands of pounds in damages to the Greek-Cypriot title deed holder, Mr. Apostolides. They could even lose their home back in the UK. Mrs. Orams voices the increasing fears amidst other ex-patriot homeowners and warns “thousands of Britons” who have acquired property here could be affected.
In recent years Brits have flocked to the north of Cyprus, exploiting inexpensive land and property prices. Mr. Apostolides declared, “The thing I will try to do is at least stop this feeling that it (Britons buying Greek Cypriot land) is an easy thing to do with out consequences”. Experts and officials alike reiterate this message, and The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have posted a cautionary statement on their official website, “non-recognition” and the possibility of a settlement “could have implications for those considering buying property”.
Our Property Consultant, stated “It is amazing that anyone would consider taking such a huge risk, sometimes with their entire life savings, and leave themselves open to legal and financial disaster by purchasing property in the north. This is even more surprising now that the severity of the situation has been brought to the attention of the general public in the UK via the newspapers. At UEG Property Services, we specialize in providing a low risk, safe and profitable investment in purely Freehold property in the EU recognized Republic of Cyprus. We strongly believe we have a duty of care to our clientele to ensure their investment or retirement is safe, secure and a pleasant experience.”
